Day 2: We Have Good News and We Must Share It
Intention
To orient our hearts to willingly share the good news, and if needed, to repent for withholding it from others.
Scripture
“Then they said to one another, ‘We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come; let us go and tell the king’s household’.”
– 2 Kings 7:9
Reflection
In 2 Kings 6–7, we read how Samaria was besieged by Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram/Syria, resulting in a severe famine. Things were getting quite desperate, and a key part of the story is found in 2 Kings 7:3–4:
“Now there were four men who were lepers at the entrance to the gate. And they said to one another, ‘Why are we sitting here until we die? If we say, “Let us enter the city,” the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. And if we sit here, we die also. So now come, let us go over to the camp of the Syrians. If they spare our lives we shall live, and if they kill us we shall but die’.”
So, the four lepers went in and discovered that the enemy had left the area, leaving behind all sorts of booty. At first, they really lived it up, eating and drinking and taking gold and silver. But it soon occurred to them that this was not the proper response. They then went and told others the good news.
The reaction of these four lepers offers spiritual truths for God’s people today. There is something quite amiss with a Christian or a Christian church that does not share the good news that they have discovered. It was quite wrong for these four men to stay in their tent counting the booty and never go back to help save the city.
The same is true today. It is not enough for us to discover the good news and simply enjoy it. The truth is, good news must be shared. Holding it back when others are in desperate need of hearing it is not how believers should act.
Whether you have been a believer for ten months or ten years, you have the most important message that anyone can — and should — hear. We dare not selfishly keep this good news to ourselves. The great Baptist preacher C. H. Spurgeon put it this way:
“If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for.”
Amen to that! We all need the attitude of the apostle Paul when he said in 1 Corinthians 9:16, “Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!”

Prayer
Lord, you have entrusted us with the greatest news that has ever been given to mankind.
May you work in us so that we are willing vessels, passing the good news on to others, so that they too can be set free and made right with Christ. We repent of the sin of refusing to share this vital message.
Lord, help us to boldly share the wonderful news of the Christian gospel with one and all.
Amen.

Good and powerful message.
I was challenged by the Five4Five recently, as I am usually reticent about deliberately sharing the gospel with family and friends, because I’m fearful about being rejected.
However, yesterday I had lunch with two long-term friends, and I followed the line in the video about “why should we be allowed into Heaven when we die”. Both friends are not church goers, but attended church as children (they are now seniors!). Interestingly, both thought about the question, then gave lots of answers which included the “I” word. They were surprised and quite shocked when I said that entry was not given on what good deeds we’d done, but on what Christ had done. Just goes to show that even a “Chicken Little” like me can gently challenge friends with the right question.
