Day 19: God Is Perfect
Intention
To recognise that regardless of our own failings, God is perfect and greatly to be praised!
Scripture
“1 I will exalt You, my God, O King,
And [with gratitude and submissive wonder] I will bless Your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless You and lovingly praise You;
Yes, [with awe-inspired reverence] I will praise Your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised,
And His greatness is [so vast and profound as to be] unsearchable [incomprehensible to man].
4 One generation shall praise Your works to another,
And shall declare Your mighty and remarkable acts.
5 On the glorious splendour of Your majesty
And on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.
6 People will speak of the power of Your awesome acts,
And [with gratitude and submissive wonder] I will tell of Your greatness.
7 They will overflow [like a fountain] when they speak of Your great and abundant goodness
And will sing joyfully of Your righteousness.
8 The LORD is gracious and full of compassion,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
9 The LORD is good to all,
And His tender mercies are over all His works [the entirety of things created].
10 All Your works shall give thanks to You and praise You, O LORD,
And Your godly ones will bless You.
11 They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom
And talk of Your power,
12 To make known to the sons of men Your mighty acts
And the glorious majesty of Your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
14 The LORD upholds all those [of His own] who fall
And raises up all those who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to You [in hopeful expectation],
And You give them their food in due time.
16 You open Your hand
And satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The LORD is [unwaveringly] righteous in all His ways
And gracious and kind in all His works.
18 The LORD is near to all who call on Him,
To all who call on Him in truth (without guile).
19 He will fulfill the desire of those who fear and worship Him [with awe-inspired reverence and obedience];
He also will hear their cry and will save them.
20 The LORD keeps all who love Him,
But all the wicked He will destroy.
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD,
And all flesh will bless and gratefully praise His holy name forever and ever.”
– Psalm 145:1–21 (Amplified Bible)
Reflection
When I read these words penned by King David, I cannot stop pondering how perfectly perfect God is.
I cannot cease contemplating how perfect his plans for us are.
Each verse of this psalm could stand alone as its own statement of truth — and yet, together, each one declares another facet of the great God whom we worship. Verse 3 captures our inability to fully comprehend just how perfect he is, or in how many ways. David exclaimed, “His greatness is unsearchable.”
We are perfectly commissioned.
He calls us to go — to go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
And he has even made that task easier: beginning right where we are, he has brought the nations to our doorstep, to homes just down the road, to our very communities. Let’s make disciples.
How perfectly he places us.
How perfectly he prepares us.
Life is complicated. We mess up, and sometimes we even give up on God. But God never gives up on us. “If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). That is what faithfulness looks like. That is what grace is. That is what kindness is.
Let’s spend more time meditating on the life-giving words of Psalm 145, including the following verses:
“One generation shall praise Your works to another,
And shall declare Your mighty and remarkable acts.
“People will speak of the power of Your awesome acts,
And [with gratitude and submissive wonder] I will tell of Your greatness.
“They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom
And talk of Your power,
To make known to the sons of men Your mighty acts
And the glorious majesty of Your kingdom.”
And then, uplifted by Psalm 145 — go.

Prayer
Father, your ways can be difficult to live by in this ungodly world. We ask you for boldness to live according to your Word.
May we bring your peace and presence to everyone we meet, through the power of your living Word, Jesus.
May we always be ready to give a clear and compelling reason for our faith, with grace and humility.
Lord God, you are perfect in all your ways — we praise and honour you with every breath.
Amen.
