Christian Writer’s ICE Arrest a Clerical Error, Say Supporters as Critics Circle

Christian commentator Samuel Sey’s ICE arrest has sparked fierce controversy, exposing deep divisions among conservatives as supporters call for prayer, compassion and a swift legal resolution.

Prolific Christian commentator Samuel Sey was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on 21 October.

Sey, an outspoken supporter of Trump’s border policies, was detained by ICE while travelling to appear on former Daily Wire CEO Jeremy Boreing’s new podcast.

The Ghanaian-born Canadian has been working in the United States since entering it legally in 2022.

ICE Arrest Sparks Confusion Over Immigration Status

On X, Boreing podcast producer Joel Berry said that the ICE issue is due to a clerical error.

Berry used the post to launch a $20,000 goal GiveSendGo campaign in support of Sey’s family while the husband and father of three is off work.

He then encouraged people who benefit from Sey’s ‘Slow to Write’ content to pitch in, saying, “If you know Samuel, you know what a good man of character he is. So many of us have been blessed by his writing and ministry. Please help!”

In another post, Berry addressed the ICE test for Christians and conservatives who rightly back responsible border control.

Berry said, “I love Samuel Sey and will do everything to help him. I also stand behind ICE and the very difficult job they have in protecting our country. I know Samuel does too. His response to this whole episode has been nothing short of admirable.”

Daily Wire journalist, mum and author Megan Basham posted a DHS statement online.

The DHS reported that Sey accepted voluntary departure after being arrested by ICE as an illegal alien from Ghana, and said, “he will remain in ICE custody until removed from the United States.”

Sey’s Christian Convictions Have Earned Him Enemies

Sey’s body of work hasn’t just included support for Trump, ICE and calling out illegal immigration.

The popular Christian commentator has been a vocal critic of abortion, Kinists from the so-called “Woke Right,” replacement theology, and antisemitism. (For some clear examples of this, see here, here, and here.)

Needless to say, his viewpoints have handed him enemies on both sides of the political-theology aisle. Along with celebrating his arrest, many of those enemies are either taking pleasure in or gloating over his eventual US exit.

A left-wing account on X wrote, “It’s remarkable to see how many people who sneered at ‘the sin of empathy’ and cheered for cruelty against others are facing their ‘if they’re going to die, they’d better do it! And decrease the surplus population!’ moment with Samuel Sey.’”

Critics Celebrate as Supporters Condemn Cruelty

At least one group from the Kinist, “Woke Right”, and anti-Zionist camps called Sey a hypocrite, and described his ICE arrest as spectacular.

The accusations draw from Sey’s opposition to illegal immigration.

Those who appear to have positioned themselves as representatives of these camps, such as Dale Partridge, jeered, “Samuel has slandered me countless times. He has misrepresented and mocked my family in public. He has claimed I’m a false teacher and implied I’m damned. That said, I hope justice is served.”

Likewise, Brian Sauve wrote, in a now-deleted post, “If Sam is deported, I will be thankful that we have one less obnoxious pretender lecturing Americans on what an American is.”

Sauve added, “The shameless lack of propriety it takes to do that sort of thing displays incredible arrogance. Good riddance.”

Delighted Sey critic, Joel Webbon, declared, “Samuel Sey was literally on his way to go on the Zionist Jeremy Boreing’s podcast to once again slander Christian ministers and, as an illegal alien wrongfully in our country, lecture Americans about our heritage.

“But God was gracious. God’s avengers (Rom. 13) arrested him and are removing him from the country. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Webbon then asked people to pray for the Sey family, before using the request to spotlight what he said was Sey’s sin.

These attacks expressed contempt and dissonance just as loudly as they did a zero regard for due process.

Some were so bad that Megan Basham felt the need to close the comments on her DHS post, saying, “I’m turning off the replies to my DHS post. I’ve never done that before, but they are a dumpster fire, and it’s awful.”

Opportunists tearing Sey apart like ravenous wolves included demands that he be hanged. Some referred to him as an ape, while others attacked his white wife.

Family Seeks Legal Resolution Amid Calls for Prayer

Pushing back against the onslaught, Katy Faust explained that becoming an American citizen can take time.

Faust wrote, “People who have never had a friend try to legally obtain a green card and/or citizenship have no idea how complicated it can be.”

“Even when you are trying to do everything right, you may get it wrong.”

Faust added, “I don’t know what happened, but I do know that Samuel Sey is a man of the Word. He doesn’t cheat. He doesn’t sneak.”

Allie Beth Stuckey stated, “I’m not at liberty to share all the details, but suffice it to say that many people rejoicing over this have given a completely incorrect rendering of what occurred and why.

“ICE did not come to his home. This whole thing is a paperwork issue that they’re working to resolve.

“Samuel Sey is a good man. As you can imagine, his wife, who’s at home with their 3 babies, is devastated and also trusting the Lord to help them find a resolution quickly. Please pray for all of the Seys. Pray for wisdom and provision. “

Supporters close to the situation are adamant that this isn’t about Sey deliberately breaking any laws.

This was reasserted by Sey’s family in a 26 October update on the GiveSendGo page.

The 39-year-old’s wife, Annie, said, “My husband Samuel Sey entered the United States legally and has been working ever since in good faith with a lawyer to obtain permanent legal status. Our family is trying to understand what went wrong in the process. In the spirit of Romans 13, our family fully supports and respects American law and is prayerfully working to get him home through the legal process.”

Australian supporters are encouraged to pray for the Sey family and a swift resolution.
