The Stones in Your Bag: Faith, Prayer, and Perseverance in the Hands of a Mighty God
When David stepped onto the battlefield, he carried no sword, no shield, no towering armour. He was a shepherd, not a soldier. Yet his heart burned with a greater strength than any giant could muster, because his trust was in the living God. Goliath mocked and threatened, clad in bronze and armed with iron, but David carried something far greater—faith.
Before he faced the Philistine, he stooped down by the brook and chose five smooth stones. Some say he carried five because Goliath had four brothers—giants from Gath who would rise to threaten Israel in later years. Others say he carried five to remind himself that God’s provision is always abundant, that grace is not scarce. Whatever the reason, those stones were not symbols of doubt, but of readiness. David was prepared for today’s battle and tomorrow’s, because his confidence was in the Lord who never fails.
And when the stone flew from his sling, striking the forehead of the giant, it was not the smoothness of the stone or the strength of David’s arm that brought victory—it was the power of God. That same God who had delivered David from the paw of the lion and the bear was faithful once more, and He would be faithful again.
Divine Strength
This truth is not only David’s story—it is ours. Each of us faces giants in life: fears, trials, temptations, griefs, and struggles that seem insurmountable. Yet the same God who strengthened David strengthens us. We may feel small and unprepared, but He equips us with “stones” of faith, prayer, Scripture, and perseverance. And even when one battle is won, He reminds us He has placed more stones in our bag. His grace is never exhausted; His mercy never runs dry.
The prophet Isaiah reminds us of this unfailing strength:
“Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and His understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.”
(Isaiah 40:28–31)
David’s hope was in the Lord, and so his strength was renewed. He stood before a giant with the heart of an eagle, the courage of a lion, and the confidence of a man upheld by God’s everlasting arms. And the same promise belongs to us: when we grow weary, He renews us; when we feel faint, He lifts us up; when the giants roar, He gives us courage to stand.
So take heart. The stones in your bag may look small, but in the hands of a mighty God, they are more than enough.
