Motivation and Method: Tony Burke’s War on Suburbs, Semantics and Saying ‘Islam’
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke went on Sky yesterday morning to explain the genius of the government’s response to anti-Semitism.
He boasted that the Albanese Government’s hate speech laws would address the motivation of terrorism, while gun laws would deal with the method.
It was a nice line.
“What we want to make sure of is that the Parliament is dealing with both the motivation of the Bondi attack and the method that was used.”
Motivation and method.
Alliteration has a way of making things sound neat and ordered and sensible.
Unfortunately, alliteration can’t disguise stupid.
Burke’s Mysterious Bondi Motivation
Tony Burke went on to explain that his hate speech laws would deal with the motivation of the Bondi terrorists.
The only problem?
Well, he couldn’t quite bring himself to say what their motivation actually was.
He told Peter Stefanovic,
“Their motivation was a deep form of bigotry, a deep form of antisemitism.”
Their motivation was a deep form of bigotry?
That’s… helpful.
For a man about to enact what he boasts will be the toughest hate speech laws this nation has ever seen… “bigotry” is a bit vague, isn’t it?
Yes, the alleged Bondi terrorists’ motivation was a deep form of bigotry and antisemitism — no argument there.
But I think we all know Tony Burke could be a little more specific than that.
On all the evidence available, the alleged motivation wasn’t general bigotry sort of floating in the ether… it was Islamic extremism.
Only Tony Burke could proudly announce that he’s cracking down on the motivation of alleged jihadis while treating the word Islam like it’s Voldemort.
As for addressing the method used by the alleged Islamists who were motivated by a form of bigotry that could have applied to anyone, well, brace yourself:
“And the method that was used was people in the suburbs of Sydney having access to six high powered firearms.”
People in the suburbs of Sydney?
Which people?
I live in the suburbs of Sydney.
So do millions of law-abiding Australians who have never once felt the urge to acquire six high-powered firearms to shoot up a Jewish festival.
The way the Home Affairs Minister frames it, the real national security threat appears to be… suburban life.
Apparently, without ever-expanding gun laws, “people in the suburbs of Sydney” simply can’t be trusted to behave themselves.
Perhaps he should be a little more specific about the kinds of people in the suburbs of Sydney who should be kept well away from guns.
To be fair, he did get a little more specific. Though, if you live in Bonnyrigg, you might not have thought it particularly fair.
Smirking, he told Stephanovic:
“Anyone who knows the suburb of Bonnyrigg shakes their head how on earth did you end up with six firearms in a suburb like that?”
Bonnyrigg is a highly multicultural suburb south of the Sydney CBD, populated mostly by Vietnamese and Chinese Australians.
Is that what Tony Burke is getting at when he says “a suburb like that”?
Is there a more appropriate postcode for people to own high-powered guns?
Or is it the fact that a foreign national here on a visa… with a son known to ASIO for alleged links to a Sydney-based Islamist terror cell… shouldn’t have been given a gun license REGARDLESS of whether he lived in Bonnyrigg, Balmain, Baulkham Hills or Botany.
But that explanation would require confronting uncomfortable truths — rather than scolding geography.
Speaking Plainly
It’s the government’s continued obfuscation that is driving me crazy in this whole debate on preventing terror attacks.
Why can’t they speak plainly?
The public will reward plain speaking. They really will. And if you doubt that… have a look at One Nation’s polling numbers.

So let’s speak plainly.
Tony Burke is the minister responsible for importing thousands of Gazans into this country — personally greeting some of them at Sydney airport.
He’s also the minister responsible for repatriating ISIS brides — a project he has seemed remarkably reluctant to talk about.
He’s also the minister whose own electorate — the one whose votes he relies on — has one of the largest Muslim populations in the country.
And he’s also the minister responsible for keeping Australians safe from Islamic terrorism.
Now, to be absolutely clear, I am not suggesting that all Gazan refugees, all ISIS brides, or all Muslims are a security threat. That would be absurd.
But that the minister responsible for counter terrorism and national security boasts that he will get at the motivation of terrorism while studiously avoiding the use of anything even remotely approaching the phrase ‘radical Islam’… it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
What Has Colonised the Minds of the Greens?
Speaking of things that don’t exactly inspire confidence — can we talk about the Greens?
I know. Like you, I’d rather not.
There have been plenty of “ridiculous” responses to the Bondi terror attack, and even more “absurd” suggestions about what it will take to keep Jewish Australians safe.
But Greens Senator Nick McKim’s speech yesterday?
It wasn’t just ridiculous, or absurd.
It was a quantum leap into a universe where logic has gone on permanent leave.
Here’s a taste. And I apologise in advance:
“Jewish Australians won’t be safe from the scourge of antisemitism until Muslim Australians are safe from the scourge of islamophobia.
“And neither will be safe until all Australians are safe from racism and from religious intolerance.
“And until we reckon with intolerance and discrimination based on any attributes.
“And until we reckon with the brutality and the underlying violence of the colonisation of this continent based on the lie of terra nullius.
“Because truly no one is safe until we are all safe just as no-one is free until everyone is free. We need a reckoning in this country.”
According to Senator McKim, to keep Jews safe from Islamic terrorists, you’ve first got to end Islamophobia.
That’s a premise so inherently stupid I can’t believe anyone — even a Green Senator — would actually think it, let alone say it.
Jews will never be safe from Islamic extremists until everyone stops being afraid of Islam?
Seriously?
And then he went on to explain that Jews actually won’t be safe from Islamic jihadis until everyone, everywhere is safe from pretty much everything.
And, of course, the real problem is the colonisation of Australia.
Because until this country has a reckoning over Captain Cook’s voyage a couple of hundred years ago… no Jewish Australian will be safe from ISIS!
Got it?
Only the Greens can link Islamic terror to terra nullius.
Was Senator McKim confused because both phrases contain the word terror?
I will give the Senator this, though: we do need a reckoning in this country. And for that… an election can’t come soon enough.
So with that in mind, an attempt to run over Jewish teenagers in an antisemitic attack in Melbourne on Monday night makes it even more urgent that we deal with the illegal colonisation of Australia by the Brits 200 years ago.
Sorry. I need to stop channelling the Greens.
What I meant to say was that the horrific incident on Monday night further illustrates just how insanely dangerous our politicians are.
While Tony Burke obfuscates on the real motivation and identity of radical Islamists… and while the Greens imagine that anti-semitism always was, always will be about the evils of colonisation… Jewish Australians continue to be targeted with not much to keep them safe but their own wits.
Jews Targeted in St Kilda
Did you see the shocking footage from St Kilda on Monday?
Jewish boys chased down the street by guys in a ute yelling “Heil Hitler” and threatening to stab them… while, at the same time, trying to mow them down.
A group of Jewish boys have been left shaken after they
were chased by a white Ute and almost mowed down
while its occupants reportedly screamed “Heil Hitler”.The boys, aged in their teens, were reportedly followed
by the car on the corner of Glen Eira Road and Hotham
Street in… pic.twitter.com/t4y4z3FGY6— Australian Jewish Association (@AustralianJA) January 19, 2026
This took place just 100m from the Addass Israel Synagogue that was firebombed a year ago.
According to the boys’ parents, they phoned police, but no-one answered. What can I say? It’s Victoria. Nothing works.
So, with the ute stalking them for five minutes, the kids ran back to their Jewish school to take shelter.
Anthony Albanese yesterday condemned what he described as an “anti-Semitic hate incident”, saying he wanted to see the offenders face “the full force of the law”.
You know… like all those other perpetrators of antisemitism have faced the full force of the law over the past two years.
He said:
“This would have been a terrifying ordeal for these young Australians, targeted for their Jewish faith.
“At a time when Australians are joining with the Jewish community in sorrow and solidarity, it is beyond disgusting to see these cowards shouting Nazi slogans at young people.
“Victorian Police are investigating, and I want to see the perpetrators face the full force of the law.”
We wait with bated breath.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan expressed shock at the incident, telling journalists:
“That is hateful behaviour. That is antisemetic behaviour and it has absolutely no place here in Victoria.”
Except it keeps finding a place in Victoria, doesn’t it?
She continued:
“Victoria police will be investigating if they have performed that salute. That salute is banned here in Victoria.”
Maybe Jactina Allan could set up some Nazi Salute amnesty bins where people could deposit their anti-semetic gestures. It’s worked so well with machetes.
As for these Jewish kids being chased by idiots in a ute… I honestly wouldn’t put it past Tony Burke to now try to ban the number of utes a person can own.
And to shake his head in disbelief that we ended up with utes in St Kilda. Do they have utes in Bonnyrigg?
The Greens will undoubtedly argue that the key to preventing Jewish school children from being run down on St Kilda streets is the removal of Captain Cook’s cottage from the Fitzroy Gardens.
Things are that silly right now.
Meanwhile, the harassment, intimidation and danger facing Jewish Australians shows absolutely zero sign of abating.
Morrison and the Prime Minister’s Mirage
On Monday, the Prime Minister stood in Parliament and made what he described as a solemn vow to keep Jewish Australians safe.
And then he said this:
“That responsibility starts with me, as Australia’s 31st Prime Minister.”
It was refreshing, if a little disconcerting, to hear the PM accepting that responsibility starts with him.
That’s been one of the criticisms of Anthony Albanese. That he has never apologised — much less taken any responsibility — for having allowed antisemitism to reach endemic levels over the past two years.
Alas, this new and improved Prime Minister was but a mirage.
Just 24 hours later, Anthony Albanese was defending his government’s terrible record on antisemitism because… well, what about Scomo?
He told Parliament:
“The idea that antisemitism began two years ago, with the change of government, is false. Despite the surge in antisemitism on their watch, did the Morrison government appoint a special envoy to combat antisemitism?”
It was an exercise in ‘whataboutism’ that would have made the most recalcitrant teenager blush.
‘Why are you upset with me? Did you see what Scotty did?’
In 2024, the Australian Jewish community suffered its most traumatic year on record, with antisemitic incidents spiking by a staggering 324 percent from the previous year.
‘Well yeah, but what about Scott Morrison?’
‘Responsibility starts with me… so let’s talk about the last guy.’
You couldn’t make this up.
Does Anthony Albanese really want to play this game?
Anthony Albanese DID appoint a special envoy to combat antisemitism… that’s true.
And then he left the envoy’s report sitting in a drawer while he awaited a report on Islamophobia, just to prove how serious he was about addressing antisemitism.
Say what you like about Scott Morrison, Prime Minister.
The inescapable fact is that 15 Australians — most of them Jews — weren’t shot dead on a Sunday afternoon at Bondi while the last guy was running the country.
That happened on your watch.
I’ll give the last word to former Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
He tweeted last night:
“Hamas never praised the actions of my Government Albo, but they did praise yours.”
Hamas never praised the actions of my Government @AlboMP, but they did praise yours.

Senator McKim’s speech is totally devoid of Logic which can only be believed by his supporters. Every day more migrants come to Australia to swell the huge numbers of Marchers who shout Hate in our streets. The Revolution has begun to take over Australia. If it succeeds , we will be like the unfortunate Iranians who cannot regain their Freedom. The UN dream (Agenda 2030 ) is for the govt. to take our real estate , and, in return give us a living wage to pay rent for a small apartment in a High-Rise, etc. Like the Greenlanders we may find it with mould or other defects , but, our new Marxist govt won’t care ! The Danish Govt. sterilised young girls, euthanised the Elderly and the Disabled, and removed many from their Inuit families to be raised in Denmark. This is what happens when people lose their democracy and Christian values. This is the Dark Side of Danish Rule.
Thanks for the satire and if it wasn’t so serious I would laugh. The foolishness continue and innocent Australians continue to pay the price. Keep speaking and writing the truth, we are listening. It helps us know we are not alone.
“Hamas never praised the actions of my Government Albo, but they did praise yours.”
What does this say about the attitude of our PM to caring aboutJews?
Love your work James.
Happy that I can have a chuckle at your words, highlighting the pure absurdity of this Government and the Ministers. Add McKim to the mix and its obvious that to be a Politician these days requires a delicate mix of corruption, selfish raw ambition and true stupidity.
Today we look at the Libs and add cowardice to the mix.
A few good men and women are paddling their hearts out to keep their country from disappearing into the quicksand of Communism and the radical Islamic protection scheme.
God help us.
How many Islamophobic attacks have there been? There don’t seem to have been many reported in the newspaper.
As a Christian (and frankly as just an educated human being) I stand with Israel. In doing so, as for most intelligent, educated and civilised Australians, I am appalled at what has happened in Bondi. Appalled but not surprised.
I am concerned, however, that the narrow focus on “Antisemitism” can be used by politicians and others to avoid the bigger and much more serious reality that must be recognised and dwelt with.
Islam sees humanity as falling into two main clusters (there is a third regarding dhimmis and the payment of jizya but …) – those who are muslims (Dar al Islam – the House of Islam) and all those who are not muslims (Dar al Harb – the House of War). Within the House of War, Israel, the Christian Church and the “West” as the remnant of Christendom in the context of historical muslim aggression are the primary as attested in the Qur’an. Then all the rest of humanity.
Raymond Ibrahim brings the seriousness of this Islamic goal to bear in a recent post:
In August, 2025, in an editorial in the Islamic State’s Arabic language newsletter, al-Naba’, the Islamic State called on Muslims in the West to engage in precisely such attacks (as that in Bondi). It began by praising the Islamic slaughter and beheadings of Christian “infidels” in Africa—specifically in Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo—before calling on the “knights of Islam” to engage in the same behaviour in the West:
“May Allah illumine your paths and preserve your jihad, and assist you in carrying and delivering it to the shores of Europe, that it might invade them and disperse their security and turn their streets and capitals into another Ituri [devastated province in Congo] and another Cabo Delgado [devastated province in Mozambique]! For [Muslim] hearts still burn for revenge against the Christians of Europe, and the call is still open for the champions of Islam to repeat the [same] acts upon them, invade their homeland, and bring down the judgments of Allah upon them as, their brothers did in Africa”
The reason that the Islamic State says “the call is still open” to slaughter infidels is because it made an even more graphic call—with detailed instructions—on how to kill Western infidels earlier in 2024. After massacring over a 100 people in a terror attack on Kerman, Iran, it issued an audio recording titled “And Kill Them Wherever You Find Them” (a reference to Koran 9:5).
“Chase your prey whether Jewish, Christian or their allies, on the streets and roads of America, Europe, and the world. Break into their homes, kill them and steal their peace of mind by any means you can lay hands on.
Understand that you are the arm of the Islamic State hitting in the kuffar’s [infidels’] homelands, and are avenging the Muslims in Palestine, Iraq, Sham, and other Muslim countries. Solidify your plans and diversify the attacks: detonate explosives, burn them with grenades and fiery agents, shoot them with bullets, cut their throats with sharp knives, and run them over with vehicles. A sincere person will not lack the means to draw blood from the hearts of the Jews, the Christians, and their allies, and thus ease the suffering in the hearts of the believers. Come at them from every door, kill them by the worst of means, turn their gatherings and celebrations into bloody massacres, do not distinguish between a civilian kaffir, and a military one, for they are all kuffar [infidels]…. Intentionally seek easy targets before hard ones, civilian targets before military one, religious targets like synagogues and churches before others, for this will satisfy the soul and will demonstrate the characteristics of the battle, as our battle with them is a religious one and we kill them wherever we come upon them in response to Allah Almighty’s command.”
Israel is not the sole target. Gaza is the “canary down the mineshaft” to test the West’s will power. WE are the target.
Their motivation was simply the Quran which refers to Jews as monkeys and says one day that even a rock will call out to a muslim that one is hiding behind it and to kill them. It tells them to never make friends with Jews and Christians and to lie to non muslims to get your way.
A child could quickly discover the hatred that their religious texts contain.
