The Berlin Pride attack has reignited questions about ideology, truth and prejudice, exposing how political narratives can distort public reactions and deepen suspicion towards Christianity.

There are moments when a society’s moral confusion is exposed in a single sentence. Following the dreadful attack at a Berlin Pride event, in which innocent people were killed and injured, a social justice activist was speaking at a vigil and reportedly lamented the identity of the attacker. According to a video posted online, she said she had hoped the perpetrator was ‘not a foreigner, but a white Christian’.

Pause and consider that. Her instinct was disappointment that the crime could not be laid at the feet of a preferred political enemy. She actually hoped it was a white Christian. In reality, the attack was carried out by 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese background. Her disappointment at that news shows just how poisonous social justice ideology has become.

She then went on to talk about the issues of ‘intersectionality’. That’s a social justice buzzword referring to the belief that society is divided into overlapping groups of oppressors and victims. According to ‘intersectionality’, a person’s moral authority and social status are determined by the combination of identities they possess rather than by their individual character or actions. Therefore, white Christians are the true oppressors, even when a Muslim man drives a van into a crowd of people.

The Tensions Between Progressivism and Islamism

Before I go any further, I should say that Christians ought to begin where Scripture begins: every human being bears the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Every innocent life lost is a tragedy. Every act of murder is an affront to the Creator. Our Lord wept at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35), and he showed compassion to those who suffered, regardless of who they were or what they believed. Christians therefore mourn with those who mourn (Romans 12:15). We should pray for the bereaved, for the injured, and for all affected by such senseless violence.

But compassion must not require us to suspend truth. One of the peculiar features of contemporary Western politics is the alliance between sections of the radical progressive left and Islamist causes. It is an alliance that frequently ignores profound differences in worldview. Progressive activists champion sexual autonomy, gender ideology and LGBT activism. Traditional Islamic teaching violently rejects those beliefs. Yet political solidarity often appears to override intellectual consistency.

That does not mean every Muslim is an extremist. Far from it. Nor does it excuse prejudice against Muslims, who, like everyone else, are people to whom Christians owe love, honesty and the offer of the Gospel. Jesus commanded us to love even our enemies (Matthew 5:44), not caricature them.

Nevertheless, Christians should not pretend that Islamist extremism is imaginary, nor should we be afraid to say that every ideology must be tested against the truth of God’s Word. Jesus did not teach that all religions are equally valid. He declared, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’ (John 14:6). Peter likewise proclaimed, ‘There is salvation in no one else’ (Acts 4:12).

Why Christians Fear ‘Conversion Practices’ Laws

What is perhaps most revealing is the eagerness of some activists to blame Christians before the evidence is even known. Christianity has become the default villain in the progressive imagination. If the facts fail to fit the narrative, disappointment follows. That should concern Christians in Britain.

It helps explain why so many evangelicals are anxious about proposals to outlaw so-called ‘conversion practices’. Of course, genuine coercion, intimidation and abuse deserve condemnation. Christians have no interest in defending cruelty. But legislation framed in vague and subjective language may be used to criminalise ordinary Christian practice.

If you’re unfamiliar with the proposed law, it would become a criminal offence to attempt to change an LGBT person’s sexuality or transgender identity. But the draft bill is so badly written, that parents could be arrested for having honest conversations with their gender-confused child.

Likewise, any Christian preaching, praying, or pastoring which is in line with biblical teaching about sexual ethics could become illegal. The proposed penalties for breaching the proposed law include prison time and fines. I say ‘Christian’ because that is precisely the group that LGBT activists have in their sights – Christians are the oppressors, remember.

The danger is not merely theoretical. Laws are seldom applied in a cultural vacuum. Where Christianity is increasingly viewed as uniquely suspect, it’s Christians who will bear the brunt. Those who instinctively assume Christians are the problem may prove remarkably creative in finding ways to use new powers against them.

Truth, Compassion and the Christian Response

Yet the answer is neither panic nor bitterness. Jesus warned that His disciples would be hated because of Him (John 15:18-20). He also called us to overcome evil with good, to speak the truth in love, and to bless those who persecute us. Christians must resist both cowardice and hatred. We refuse to compromise biblical truth, yet we refuse to surrender Christian charity.

The Gospel leaves no room for tribal loyalties that value political narratives above human lives. It also leaves no room for fear. Christ reigns. His kingdom is advancing. Our task is not to echo the slogans of either the progressive left or the populist right, but to proclaim faithfully the crucified and risen Lord.

In an age captivated by ideology, our calling remains refreshingly simple: tell the truth, love our neighbour, and trust the King who sits upon the throne.
