weep for our nation

Day 1: Weep for the Nation

1 May 2022

3.4 MINS

Intention

To spur the people of God to intercede and weep between the porch and the altar

Scripture

“Let the priests, who minister to the Lord,
weep between the porch and the altar,
let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord,
and do not give Your heritage to reproach,
that the nations should rule over them.
Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?'”
— Joel 2:17 (NKJV)

Reflection

This is the hour for united, passionate, persevering prayer for our nation.  Now is the time to take up the burdens of the Lord and weep, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, between the porch and the altar.

Today is the day to stand in the gap on behalf of our land and cry out for the Lord to protect us from encroaching evil — both within and without — recognising that there is an increasing global threat of war — even nuclear war — as nations rise and fall under scheming leaders who form alliances.

“How dare the nations plan a rebellion,
Ranting and raging against the Lord Most High?
Their foolish plots are futile!
Look at how the kings rise up to hold their summit,
Scheming and conferring together
Against God and His Anointed King, saying:
‘Let’s come together and breakaway from the Creator,
Casting off once and for all these controlling chains
Of God and His Christ!’” — Psalm 2:1-3 (TPT)

Here, in our own nation, most of our leaders no longer look to the church for guidance. Many now mock us and boldly legislate for sin to become enshrined in the laws of our land.

The battle lines have been drawn, and there are challenging days ahead — no matter what political party is given the honour of forming government.  We intercede to see the fulfilment of Isaiah 9:6 — “That the Government shall be upon His shoulders.”

As early as 2019, some of us felt God’s call to start a South Pacific Prayer Watch, followed by an ANZAC Prayer Watch with New Zealand, knowing that Australia had a major role in our region with the threat of war increasing.

Amidst all of this, God has a plan for His church. He plans to demonstrate His love, power and authority in the days ahead.

“Summon Your power, God,
show us Your strength, our God,
as You have done before.”
— Psalm 68:28 (NIV)

Those of us regularly praying for Federal, State and Local governments know the joys of breakthrough, but we also regularly experience discouragement over battles seemingly lost. Our confidence is in knowing that God is in control and is working His purpose out.

In 1894, this wonderful hymn was written, based on Habakkuk 2:14 —

God is working His purpose out as year succeeds to year;
God is working His purpose out, and the time is drawing near;
Nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea!

So, let us keep interceding between the porch and the altar for the glory of God to arise in our nation of Australia.

Prayer

Father, we give thanks that You have given us such a deep love for our nation. Bless our land, we pray. Strengthen us, Your church, to arise to see the glory of Your Kingdom in our midst during this election.

We declare:

“So wake up you living gateways, and rejoice!
Fling wide open, you forever-doors of destiny!
Here He comes; the Glory King is ready to come in!
You ask (let Australia ask) Who is this Glory King?
He’s the Lord of Victory, armed and ready for battle,
The Mighty One, invincible Commander of heaven’s hosts!
Yes, He is the Glory King!”
— Psalm 24:9-10 (TPT)
