ABC TV Makes Channel 22 More Appropriate for Families
Earlier this year, I alerted you to a programming issue on ABC TV’s Channel 22.
I found that during every 24-hour period, the one channel broadcast ABC Kids from 5am to 7.30pm, but changed to adult-only content from 7.30pm till 5am!
The actual changeover indicator at 7.30pm was nothing more than a ten-second graphic saying goodbye to kids (ABC Kids) and announcing the start of adult viewing (ABC Plus).
I wrote a letter to the ABC voicing my concern about the inappropriateness of having kids programs and adult content on the same channel and asked them to address this issue.
I can now give you an update with some good news.
Family-Friendly
Recently, I saw that the ABC had removed ABC Plus from Channel 22 and replaced it with ABC Family. So now all of Channel 22 contains ‘family-friendly’ programs. ABC Kids is broadcast from 5am to 7.30pm, then ABC Family continues until 5am.
I have no direct evidence of this, but I would like to think that it was letters written by many concerned parents that prompted the ABC to make the above changes to Channel 22.
As I had written to the ABC about these concerns, when I saw this appropriate change, I wrote again to thank them for addressing this issue. They did the right thing, and I needed to let them know it was appreciated.
Let me encourage you to never underestimate the power of writing letters to voice your concerns over anything you deem inappropriate content aired or broadcast on public radio or television.
Media companies concerned about their public ratings will take notice of what you say.
